Visit to the Envirocentre

On Thursday we visited the Envirocentre to find out more about what's happening to all our food packaging rubbish and to think of some alternatives to using plastic wrappers. Did you know that the rubbish from our homes is trucked out of Gisborne daily (five truck and trailor loads!) and carted away to be buried in a massive hole that has been dug out of the side of a mountain over in the Bay of Plenty?? Papatuanuku, the Earth Mother, can't be feeling good about this and neither do we!

With the help of Kirsty and Steph we each made out own wax food wrapper to help us avoid creating extra rubbish from our lunchboxes. Many of us used them for our school lunch the next day. We love them because they keep our food contained and fresh - and they smell delicious!

Read and Grab!

Read and Grab is one of our new Structured Literacy games. The fabulous thing about this game is that we have got  a pack to suit every stage. It can be organised to work with all the letter sounds that we have been learning about so is a fun way to reinforce our learning! I think you can see from our faces how much fun we were having :)

A Bike Ride in the Sunshine....

There's nothing like riding your bike on a sunny afternoon! See photos - here.

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of pics because even the teacher couldn't resist getting on a bike and enjoying the fresh air!

What to do about our rubbish problem?

On Thursday, we used role play to help us generate some ideas for the letter we want to write to the newspaper about the rubbish problem around Makaraka and the wider Gisborne region. Some of us took on the role of the Gisborne council and mayor, while others were local reporters and general public, voicing our concerns and asking what will be done about this problem......
